This is the two-cap box: one keychain, a collector's guide and two Series 3 Clickeez that nobody, including us, can tell you the identity of before it is opened. It is the entry point to the Bubble Pops wave and the size most people buy first, because it answers the only question that matters at the start - whether the click is as satisfying in your hand as it looks on a shelf.

Series 3 changed two things from the original run. The caps are rounded instead of square, and the switch under them makes a softer pop rather than the dry clack of a mechanical key. Neither change is cosmetic: the rounded shell sits differently between finger and thumb, and the pop is quieter, which matters when the thing is being pressed several hundred times in the back of a car.

What is actually in the box

Two Clickeez, one keychain and a collector's guide. The guide is a fold-out with the full Series 3 line-up printed on it, which is the only place you will find out what you are missing without going online. The two caps are sealed and random - that is the point of the format, not a shortcoming of this particular box.

The pop, in plain terms

Each Clickee is a single keyboard keycap on a real switch. Press it and it travels, bottoms out and springs back. Series 3 uses a rounder shell and a softer sound than Series 1; if you have handled the original squares, this feels closer to a bubble-wrap pop than to a keyboard. There is no electronics inside and no battery to replace.

Two caps against seventy

Series 3 has seventy characters across four themes - Pink Life, Baked Goodies, Magical Glow and Forest Pals. Two caps out of seventy is a taste, not a start on a set. If the plan is to actually finish a theme, the five and twelve-cap boxes exist for that reason and the maths there is far kinder.

Connecting them up

The caps clip to each other on all four sides and to the supplied keychain, so a handful of them becomes a short chain that hangs off a bag. That is the whole mechanism - no tools, no adhesive, nothing to lose except the caps themselves. A two-pack makes a chain of two, which is exactly as small as it sounds.

As a gift. A stocking-filler size: cheap enough to give three of, small enough to post.
